Hi again GATA members and friends! First, we want to sincerely thank everyone who attended the weekend workshop, "Embracing the Mind, Body, and Spirit: Integrating Art Therapy and Yoga Therapy" with Dr. Ellen Horovitz on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. It was wonderful to welcome such a diverse group of people throughout the weekend. We had art therapists from Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama at the workshop, as well as social workers, psychologists, yoga and pilates instructors/therapists, and others interested in yoga and/or art therapy. Just a quick recap for those who were unable to make it... We started out Friday night with an intimate lecture with Dr. Horovitz, who we now know as our dear friend, Ellen. Ellen led us through a series of slides which spoke to the history, theory, and science behind yoga therapy, as well as some case examples. We also discussed how she has come to integrate yoga therapy and art therapy, and how it has influenced her personal and professional identity and practices. We all woke to a beautiful spring morning on Saturday and were thrilled to see more familiar and new faces! Saturday morning and afternoon included a variety of experientials, which focused on self-care. Ellen led us through yoga therapy techniques and art therapy directives – via Meditation, Mudras, Yoga Nidra, Hatha Yoga, Restorative/Gentle Yoga, a Labyrinth walk, breath work, and creation (art and writing) – which were explored individually, in pairs, and in groups to instill increased self-awareness and enhance contemplation and self-discovery. The group discussed their personal experiences with these directives and techniques, how to integrate yoga therapy and art therapy in therapy sessions with clients, and how they can use them in personal/self-care practices. It seemed that everyone left on Saturday afternoon feeling a little more connected and inspired to bring some - or many - of the experiences, discussions, and/or techniques into their personal and professional lives... in one way or another. Thank you again to Ellen and all of the participants from near and far for coming and for being a part of this unique experience. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you again soon, as well as for the next GATA program! As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments! Your GATA programming co-chairs, Paige and Miranda...and check out the slideshow of some of the pictures from the weekend! What a fabulous evening of discussion and sharing of ideas on ways to give Art Therapy a voice in Georgia. Thank you to Sandra Tate for hosting in her welcoming studio and to Kari Ruff for capturing the evening!
